By deciding to write my blog posts in English, I take a bigger risk than writing it in my mother tongue, French. It would be so much easier to write in the language I master best, in which I know what sounds idiomatic, what grammar rules are correct, how to spell most words, etc.
And yet, here I am, typing in Englis
h. It does have some advantages. For one, English spelling is slightly easier than French, at least it is to me. English grammar is a walk in the park compared to French one, if you do not go to deep in the topic. Finally, I hear and read so much English, actually a lot more than I do French, that I tend to think in English spontaneously. consequently, I save myself the time of translating what I think from English to French.
But typing these posts, which, in appearance, are harmless, means a lot more. As a translator, I cannot afford to publish texts full of typos or mistakes. I may as well scream at the top of my lungs that I am a bad translator and start a new career right now.
Coming out of the professional context, who really likes bad spelling? Would you buy newspapers or books if they were full of mistakes? Would you succumb to a love letter if it read “I luv u”? Bad spelling does not save you time and will never be of any benefits. The only thing that will change is that you will spread doubt in your own mind. Is it accommodation or acomodation? Straight or strate? Then you will waste a lot of time by double checking your spelling. If you are lucky that is,as you might just completely forget the right spelling.
